According to the Farmers Alamanac, the Winter Solstice is the astronomical moment the sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn. In terms of daylight, it is the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Winter Solstice marks the official start of Winter.
